Evidence shows a strong correlation between engaged boards and high-quality outcomes. In this On Demand presentation, Engaging Hospital Boards in Quality and Safety, James Conway, MS, explores that relationship, and explains the key elements necessary to create and sustain high-performance boards focused on quality and safety.
Research showing the impact of boards on quality and safety is not the only thing driving the movement to engage trustees more fully in the pursuit of better outcomes. There is also growing pressure from regulatory and other agencies — from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, to The Joint Commission, to the Office of the Inspector General of the US Department of Health and Human Services — for governing boards to be more accountable for quality and safety.
For boards to be effective stewards of quality and safety, they must be actively involved in setting quality and safety goals, in monitoring progress, and in reviewing strategies. They must work closely with the medical leadership. Data and patient stories must be shared regularly with trustees. Expectations for communication, disclosure, support, resolution, and learning must be clear.
Jim Conway clearly outlines the steps necessary to “get boards on board,” including how to set powerful aims, build the foundation, build will, and drive execution.
